ARCHICAD to VR in a few simple clicks

Like all technology fanatics out there I pre-ordered the Oculus Rift and took delivery in July this year. When I received it, I went about the various detailed workflows to take a model from ARCHICAD into a suitable format to view using the Oculus Rift. The one thing I struggled with is the number of steps that were required and the lack of quick workflows for ARCHICAD users and the file types that it exports that are accepted by Gaming Engines.

ARCHICAD 19 Top 5 Features

It is that time of the year again and GRAPHISOFT have delivered another great release in ARCHICAD 19. There are a great number of features in this release and a number of these will make the creation of Traditional and BIM deliverables more accurate and efficient. SPEED is the focus of this release and SPEED you get. I don’t really see this as a feature in itself because all software developers should be providing this. Some just don’t think it is important. Point Clouds are another key feature of this release that haven’t made my list for this year. It is a great long awaited feature for some and it is pretty neat but point clouds are not really part of our processes at the moment. Let’s work our way through my favourite features.

In my Last Post I discussed my Top 5 Features in ArchiCAD 18. One of the features that need further review in detail is the Revision Tool. It has been one of the most requested features by users for a number of years and it is finally here in ArchiCAD 18. It is a tool as I have previously stated that requires time to trial to fully understand. I recommend that you take the time to investigate this feature and make sure you include it in your workflows, as you will benefit from timesaving and quality control you achieve through using it.

The other week I was fortunate enough to be invited to present at Graphisoft Australia’s ArchiCAD 18 Launch Conference in Brisbane. I had the opportunity to share my presentation from Graphisoft’s KCC 2014 Conference in Budapest, with local users and share my thoughts on the New Features in ArchiCAD 18 that I believed would benefit Fulton Trotter Architects the most. Below is my Top 5 Feature list from ArchiCAD 18. I have included a description on how these features will benefit our current workflows and generate new workflows. You will note that I haven’t included the Rendering Tool in my Top 5. There is a reason for this as it is very capable and will enable use to create some really impressive renders straight from ArchiCAD but as a feature it will not add significantly to productivity as Renders can be outsourced.

Delivering Quality BIM

BIM is one of the biggest catch phrases in the Construction Industry in Australia with many players claiming to have BIM Capabilities. Over the last couple of months I have been thinking quite intensively about this. There are organisations that have created systems to determine BIM Capability, but some of the areas in their rating system I don’t believe really are a good measure of your BIM capability. How is a capability to set up IT infrastructure a rated item? I am asking myself how do you confirm the quality of your BIM deliverables? And how can I set up systems that enable Fulton Trotter to meet current and future BIM deliverables.

It is just about that time of year when ArchiCAD users get their hands on the latest release of ArchiCAD. The cries can be heard already "where is the Stair Tool?" etc. I used to be one of these people that would focus on what Graphisoft wasn't doing and missing out on the opportunities that their development brought with the new release. Yes there are things that need attention in ArchiCAD and as a client that pays for the software we should be getting software that enables us to meet our deliverables, but I hope by the end of this post I might bring you closer to my way of thinking.
