A number of years ago I realised that the standard of commercially available Templates for ARCHICAD were of such a poor standard that I was shocked. The problem being that,

Like all technology fanatics out there I pre-ordered the Oculus Rift and took delivery in July this year. When I received it, I went about the various detailed workflows to take a model from ARCHICAD into a suitable format to view using the Oculus Rift. The one thing I struggled with is the number of steps that were required and the lack of quick workflows for ARCHICAD users and the file types that it exports that are accepted by Gaming Engines.

OPENBIM collaboration and the use of IFC2x3 (format currently supported by ARCHICAD 19) files requires a reasonable amount of skill to get right. There are a number of issues that users are likely to face when taking advantage of OPENBIM collaboration processes via IFC. Not all users have been trained in such processes and many are not sure what to expect from an IFC based workflow. In this post we cover issues users face when using Reference Models and their appearance in plan view.

As the person responsible for the implementation of BIM Processes for a medium sized Architectural Practice, a daily challenge arises where a number of team members will inevitably struggle with the switch from traditional methods of delivery to BIM processes. 18 months ago I implemented a major change in the way that we work at FTA by making users add specific data to elements that they model in ARCHICAD. This change from the generic approach of the past 10 years did cause significant grief for some. As I begin to develop additional BIM capabilities into our ARCHICAD template and workflows I have spent considerable time thinking about improving the implementation process and reducing / removing the change that the team experiences. As much as BIM is about process and not technology, it is the technology or the tool that needs optimisation to assist in making the process easier.

ARCHICAD 19 Top 5 Features

It is that time of the year again and GRAPHISOFT have delivered another great release in ARCHICAD 19. There are a great number of features in this release and a number of these will make the creation of Traditional and BIM deliverables more accurate and efficient. SPEED is the focus of this release and SPEED you get. I don’t really see this as a feature in itself because all software developers should be providing this. Some just don’t think it is important. Point Clouds are another key feature of this release that haven’t made my list for this year. It is a great long awaited feature for some and it is pretty neat but point clouds are not really part of our processes at the moment. Let’s work our way through my favourite features.

I have been undertaking more and more research relating to BIM Data. It isn’t something that is requested by our clients today but they will ask for it sometime in the future. Why am I spending the time researching something that I don’t need to deliver right now? BIM processes are disruptive changes to the traditional delivery methods of all parties in the Design and Construction Process. Imagine for a moment you as a business continued along and only focused on what your client wants today. Tomorrow your client comes in and asks for BIM to FM deliverable. Your whole office would have to rapidly change and learn everything in a short period of time. This would lead to significant losses in productivity and has the potential to send your business broke, as you haven’t researched what you need to do to achieve it.

It is with great excitement that we can now announce the speaker list for the Inaugural ARCHICON – ArchiCAD User Conference | Brisbane, Australia on the 22^nd May, 2015.

The speakers have been selected based on their skills in a variety of different fields and techniques that we believe most ArchiCAD users currently aren’t embracing. The theme of the event is to “Aspire and Implement Tomorrow,” with topics covering World Leading OPENBIM Processes through to day to day issues that ArchiCAD users face.
